It is very important to provide rain barrels with a proper overflow route to prevent localized flooding and damage to building foundations. The video to the left shows an open faucet two-thirds up the rain barrel, which provides a restricted overflow. The water drops into a paved channel that drains away from the house toward the rain garden. The video to the right shows another option, an overlow pipe that is connected to the top of the barrel. The two inch pipe provides and unrestricted overflow.
